The Black Shadow Over the Republic: Who Really Owns Merkel’s 16 Years?
The black shadow still looms over Germany. Sixteen years of stagnation under Angela Merkel—who is responsible? Merkel herself?
No. It’s the voters who found comfort in stagnation, mistook the household thrift of a Swabian housewife for economic competence, and kept her in power election after election.
Let’s not forget the media, which spent 16 years turning a blind eye to Merkel’s reckless negligence, preferring to place her on a throne, complete with scepter and orb, instead of holding her accountable.
Then came the ‘Ampel’ (FDP,GRÜNE,SPD) coalition, promising a bold new course for climate policy.
The mission? Juggle four flaming torches at once: cut CO2 emissions at warp speed, ramp up renewables to the level of a climate-neutral society, provide alternative economic prospects for coal regions to prevent a right-wing surge, and power German industry with enough green electricity to avoid a competitive disadvantage.
The result? A historical paradox—an experiment so uniquely absurd that future generations will study it with bewilderment.
Merkel left a pile of rubble, and the Ampel tried to clean it up using her very own silk gloves.
Their grand strategy? Drown the burdens of the energy transition in a sea of sophisticated subsidies. But the old approach—solving problems by avoiding conflict—failed spectacularly.
The problems had grown, and financial resources had shrunk.
The result? A German public that is utterly exhausted. Their mood today? “Leave us alone with climate policy! We can’t save the planet alone, and frankly, we have bigger problems right now.”
With war, political chaos, and inflation crushing the national psyche, Germany hasn’t even had the relief of a good old-fashioned natural disaster to shake things up.
When Germans hear ‘climate policy’ today, most of them just think ‘Heating Law.’ That’s because the government managed to botch even the execution of its own environmental agenda.
The "Ampel" isn’t solely to blame for the collapse of public trust in climate policy, but they could have at least softened the blow. Instead, they had a historic opportunity to use their broad-based majority to bring people together—an opportunity they squandered with breathtaking incompetence.
The Greens, blinded by their righteous crusade, ignored the struggles of everyday people.
The FDP, more concerned with pandering to sports car enthusiasts, acted as if climate targets were someone else’s problem.
And the SPD? They seemed oblivious to the fact that the green transition is the defining social issue of our time.
Sure, there were small wins in renewable energy expansion—but the grand breakthrough never came. Instead of consensus, we got frustration.
Want to see how deep the damage runs? Look no further than the CDU’s new climate stance. Friedrich Merz, Germany’s own Mr. Burns from The Simpsons, is rambling about nuclear fusion reactors—technology that might help someday but does absolutely nothing for the crisis we face today.
And he’s already fantasizing about tearing down those ‘ugly’ wind turbines. His policy experts, of course, know better.
Even within the CDU, there’s an understanding that transformation comes with sacrifice. But Merz doesn’t want to scare the voters—so better to ignore reality and sell fairy tales instead.
Even the Greens, once the climate warriors of German politics, have changed their tune. Now it’s all about ‘bringing everyone along.’ Why? Because ‘sacrifice’ has become a dirty word. Because climate, as a political issue, has become too hot to touch.
So, who will I vote for today?
Who even deserves my vote?
And more importantly—does Mother Nature give a damn if we spend all our political capital bickering over migration and economic growth while the planet burns?
The answer, dear reader, is already written in the rising tides, the burning forests, and the dried-up rivers of a world that no longer cares about our pathetic political squabbles.
Sincerely,
