Turkish opposition holds mass protest in support of jailed Istanbul mayor • FRANCE 24 English
THEY WANT YOU AFRAID. THEY WANT YOU QUIET. THEY WANT YOU GONE.
Imagine growing up under the rule of a man whose face never disappears from your screen, whose voice is the ever-present thunder of power.
In Turkey, an entire generation has been raised under Erdoğan, a leader who has turned from a once-promising reformer into an unshakable autocrat, tightening his grip on every aspect of life.
Youth, the very essence of rebellion and change, has found itself crushed under the weight of surveillance, oppression, and economic despair.
But it never starts that way. No, power is never taken in one swift move—it seeps in, little by little.
First, they control what you wear, then who you marry, then how many children you have.
Next, they strip away your education, your job prospects, and when you finally stand up—when you demand a future—they label you a terrorist.
That’s how it works. That’s how it has always worked. And it’s not just Turkey. It’s everywhere.
THEY KEEP YOU DOWN WITH FEAR
Fear is the ultimate weapon. The youth in Turkey had their uprising in 2013, during the Gezi protests.
It was the largest resistance in the country’s history, a stand against the suffocating control of an increasingly paranoid regime.
But what did Erdoğan do? He crushed it.
He called them “plunderers.”
He made them out to be criminals, traitors. And the police?
They turned peaceful protests into bloodbaths.
And now, when Turkey’s youth should be rising again, fighting for their futures, they are instead thinking of leaving.
Three out of four young Turks want to flee. Because the message is clear: this land is not yours anymore.
And in Germany? The same story, different setting. At cafés in Berlin, well-dressed citizens discuss escape routes in hushed voices.
Canada, South Africa, Argentina—anywhere but here. Why?
Because another strongman lurks on the horizon. Putin’s shadow stretches over Europe, and with Trump back in the White House, NATO is suddenly a question mark.
Fear breeds the instinct to flee. And if the people flee, the battle is already lost.
PROPAGANDA TELLS YOU TO ACCEPT YOUR CHAINS
But fear alone isn’t enough. To keep you down, they need you confused.
They feed you propaganda disguised as debate. They twist democracy until it looks like a broken system that’s not worth saving.
Look at Germany. The far-right AfD is rising, and its leaders are cozying up to Moscow.
And what does the government do?
It scrambles, stumbles, throws empty words at a population that’s already losing faith.
They don’t tell you the real danger: that democracy doesn’t die in a war—it rots from the inside.
The walls don’t come crashing down.
They get eaten away, piece by piece, by apathy, by division, by the seductive whispers of populists who promise stability at the cost of your freedom.
And the worst part?
They convince you that leaving is the only option. That defending your future is futile. That fighting back is impossible.
THEY FEAR THE MASSES—BECAUSE THE MASSES MAKE HISTORY
But here’s the truth: history doesn’t belong to the powerful.
It belongs to those who refuse to kneel.
It belongs to the millions who take to the streets, to the students who refuse to stay silent, to the workers who shut down entire economies.
When a government fears its people, it is already weak.
Erdoğan had to back down when the protests in Istanbul grew too big to ignore.
The people forced his retreat.
In Serbia, mass protests pushed a dictator to reconsider.
Even the strongest regimes have cracks. And those cracks widen when people push.
If the youth of Turkey stop fleeing and start fighting, Erdoğan falls.
If the people of Germany refuse to let fear dictate their future, the AfD collapses.
If Europe stands united instead of divided, Putin loses.
This is not the time to run.
This is the time to stand.
This is the time to take back control—not just from politicians, but from the fear that keeps you chained.
Because in the end, the real power has never belonged to them.
It has always belonged to you.
Sincerely,
