Pandemic "Made in USA": A Catastrophe Unfolding in Real Time
Five years after COVID-19, humanity should have learned its lesson. Yet here we are, staring down the barrel of another potential global pandemic—this time, a highly pathogenic strain of H5N1 bird flu that has already decimated over 150 million poultry in the U.S. and recently claimed its first human victim.
This is not a drill.
This is not an overreaction.
This is the catastrophic result of willful ignorance, corporate greed, and the systemic dismantling of science, healthcare, and education.
The United States is currently a petri dish for viral evolution. Since 2022, a hyper-contagious variant of H5N1 has been wreaking havoc across bird populations.
In February 2024, the virus made the leap to dairy cows—an unprecedented and deeply alarming development. As of now, over 950 dairy farms are affected. In January 2025, the first confirmed human fatality was recorded. Yet the response?
A predictable, incompetent mix of denial, delay, and deregulation.
A Disaster on Repeat: Have We Learned Nothing?
Let’s be clear: pandemics do not simply "happen." They are a direct result of human negligence, lack of preparedness, and the prioritization of economic interests over public health.
The 1918 Spanish Flu, which originated in the U.S. before spreading worldwide, followed a similar trajectory—wild birds, domestic animals, humans. The difference?
In 1918, we didn’t know better. In 2025, we do—and we are still making the same catastrophic mistakes.
The U.S. government and agricultural industry have responded to this crisis with a level of incompetence that would make even the worst COVID-19 failures look like strategic brilliance.
Officials took over five weeks to even identify H5N1 as the cause of mass illness in cows.
Infected animals were transported across state lines, spreading the virus. There was no comprehensive testing of dairy products until late 2024, despite mounting evidence that raw milk was lethal to farm animals.
And when farm workers started getting sick? Protective gear was not even provided.
From Science Denial to Policy Failure
Why? Because the U.S. agricultural industry is too powerful to regulate. The dairy and poultry industries are multi-billion-dollar behemoths that have successfully lobbied against transparency, regulation, and early intervention.
Just like in the early days of COVID-19, officials downplayed the risk, fearing that restricting milk or poultry production would "harm the economy." But here’s the ugly truth: ignoring science does not save the economy. It destroys it.
This is what happens when you gut public health funding.
This is what happens when you demonize scientists.
This is what happens when education is systematically devalued, when people are trained to ignore experts in favor of conspiracy theories and corporate propaganda.
Five years ago, a virus with zoonotic potential shut the world down. That virus was not a one-off event. It was a warning.
A Looming Pandemic—And the Last Chance to Stop It
We are now watching a familiar, deadly pattern unfold. H5N1, once confined to birds, is now infecting mammals—including humans.
Genetic sequencing has confirmed that the virus is already mutating to better adapt to human hosts. In December 2024, U.S. scientists found that H5N1 requires only a single additional mutation to efficiently bind to human cells.
Read that again. One mutation away.
Should this virus acquire sustained human-to-human transmission, we are looking at the next pandemic.
And unlike COVID-19, which had a relatively low fatality rate, H5N1 has historically killed over 50% of the people it infects. If that percentage holds, we are talking about tens of millions of deaths worldwide.
This crisis could have been prevented. But instead of prioritizing scientific research, instead of maintaining robust pandemic preparedness, we allowed a culture of anti-intellectualism to take over.
Funding for epidemiology? Slashed.
Healthcare systems? Privatized and hollowed out.
Public trust in science? Systematically dismantled.
The Unfiltered Truth: If We Do Not Change Course, We Will Pay the Ultimate Price
To those who scoff at "alarmism": you are repeating the mistakes of 2019.
To those who still believe science is an "opinion" rather than a method of survival: you are complicit in what comes next.
The choice before us is simple: reinvest in science, healthcare, and education—or suffer the consequences.
The next pandemic is knocking at the door. The only question left is whether we will answer with intelligence or with the same suicidal complacency that brought us here.
Addendum:
"Multiple pieces of evidence" now confirm the benefits of mask usage in the event of an emerging epidemic—not only for protecting vulnerable individuals from infection but also for general infection control. This is the conclusion reached by Australian scientists in their new review study, published in the latest issue of the British Medical Journal.
The analysis of numerous controlled studies and various experiments conducted since the beginning of this century has shown that all types of mouth and face coverings can help mitigate the impact of a severe new infectious disease. Especially at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, masks were in short supply, even though there was already sufficient evidence of their effectiveness, particularly in hospitals and nursing homes.
The researchers, led by Abrar Chughtai from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, evaluated the evidence for different types of masks. Respiratory protection masks such as FFP2 and FFP3, some of which are equipped with filters, were found to reduce the risk of infection by up to 95%, depending on the duration of exposure. While this protective effect is lower for surgical masks and even further reduced for cloth masks—which were widely used at the beginning of the pandemic due to mask shortages—researchers still observed a measurable level of infection protection with all types of masks.
The scientists strongly recommend stockpiling an adequate supply of respiratory protection masks.
Additionally, they stress the importance of public health authorities countering the misinformation about mask usage that has been increasing since the first coronavirus outbreak in 2003.
