The art of progress is to preserve order amid change, and to preserve change amid order. Life refuses to be embalmed alive.

The Rise of J.D. Vance and the Post-Liberal Future: A Dangerous Experiment in American Politics
August 13, 2024: Mark Cuban and Jon Stewart in Conversation
*M.C.: "Watch what’s happening in Silicon Valley—it’s insane. It’s more of a takeover thing. Trying to put themselves in a position to have as much control as possible. They want Trump to be the CEO of the United States of America, and they want to be the board of directors that makes him listen to them."
J.S.: "What is the ethos? Because it seems like, in the old days of innovation, there was a certain amount of ‘we’re innovating the internet, we’re taking things.’ Now it seems much more about sort of this social engineering and transhumanism. And we are going to join with computers, and together, eight of us are going to run everything."
M.C.: "Dominate, right?"
J.S.: "Is that the ethos you see?"
M.C.: "Yeah, I think…"
J.S.: "I am going to go with yeah…"
M.C.: "They’ve gotten to the point now where they feel like they should control the world, and that there should be a CEO in charge of everything."
J.S.: "Because they have a good photo app?"
M.C.: "Because they’re rich as f… right?"
For a while, it seemed as though J.D. Vance, the Vice President of the United States, was taking a quiet backseat to the Trump-Musk show.
He made few public appearances, spoke rarely to the media, and left many wondering whether he would be just another Kamala Harris—overshadowed and ineffective.
That illusion has now shattered. Vance is not just a figurehead. He is a force. And not just any force, but one shaped and fueled by radical post-liberal and neoreactionary ideologies that threaten to dismantle the very foundations of American democracy.
At just 40 years old, Vance represents the next phase of right-wing politics: not the familiar brand of aging Reaganites clinging to free-market capitalism, but something far more insidious.
He and his ideological allies don’t just want to tweak the system—they want to burn it down and rebuild it into an unrecognizable dystopia.
The Architects of a New Order
Vance’s worldview is shaped by an eclectic mix of intellectual extremists: post-liberal theorists, Catholic integralists, neo-monarchists, and Silicon Valley disruptors who see democracy as an obstacle rather than an ideal.
These are not just fringe thinkers in dark corners of the internet. They are well-connected, well-funded, and increasingly influential in Washington.
Patrick Deneen: The Post-Liberal Crusader
A political theorist at Notre Dame, Deneen rose to prominence with his 2018 book Why Liberalism Failed, arguing that individualism and free markets have hollowed out social cohesion.
His 2023 book Regime Change goes even further, calling for a new conservative elite to replace the current liberal ruling class—a “populist aristocracy” that would govern in the name of the “common good.”
Deneen is not talking about a democratic shift. He wants a controlled political reordering, one where the people have fewer choices and a handpicked conservative elite dictates society’s direction.
Vance has fully embraced this vision, declaring his allegiance to the “post-liberal right.”
Peter Thiel: The Tech Billionaire Who Gave Up on Democracy
Thiel, co-founder of PayPal and Palantir, famously wrote in 2009 that he no longer believed freedom and democracy were compatible.
He dreams of privatized microstates, corporate-run societies, and government so small that it’s barely there.
He’s poured millions into Vance’s political career, ensuring that his protégé carries this vision into the highest offices of government.
Thiel’s influence extends far beyond campaign donations. His network of politicians and investors—the so-called “Thielverse”—is aggressively pushing a future where big business replaces public institutions.
Vance’s ties to Thiel aren’t just financial; they are ideological. The VP isn’t interested in fixing government—he’s interested in hollowing it out.
Curtis Yarvin: The Neoreactionary Monarchist
Yarvin, also known as Mencius Moldbug, is a former software developer turned philosopher of the far right. His core belief? Democracy is a failure.
The U.S. government, he argues, should be run like a corporation, with an all-powerful CEO at the helm. He coined the term “redpilled” (yes, that redpill) to describe waking up to the idea that liberal democracy is a sham.
Vance has directly referenced Yarvin’s ideas, particularly his calls to gut the federal bureaucracy.
In 2021, the then-Senate candidate advised Trump to “fire every civil servant and replace them with our people.” Yarvin himself has praised Vance as “perfect in almost every way.”
Oren Cass: The Populist Economist
Cass might seem like the odd one out—a policy wonk advocating for stronger labor rights and higher wages.
But don’t be fooled. His vision aligns with the others: a rejection of global capitalism in favor of a nationalist, government-controlled economy that rewards political loyalty.
Cass argues that Republicans should embrace unions, but not in a way that empowers workers—rather, in a way that puts them under conservative control.
The Next Generation of Conservative Authoritarianism
What makes this movement so dangerous is its combination of intellectual legitimacy and political momentum.
The old guard of conservative politics—the tax-cutting, deregulating, war-hawk elites—is fading. The new right, led by Vance and his mentors, is more radical, more theocratic, and more ruthless.
This isn’t just about rolling back progressive policies. It’s about replacing the entire postwar liberal order with something unrecognizably authoritarian. It means:
The End of Democratic Governance: Elections may still be held, but the goal is to entrench a ruling class that ensures no real opposition.
The Gutting of Institutions: Expect mass purges of civil servants, scientists, regulators, and any independent oversight.
The Destruction of Public Education: An uneducated populace is easier to control. School curricula will shift toward nationalist and religious indoctrination.
Corporate Feudalism: Government functions will be outsourced to billionaire-backed enterprises with zero accountability.
A Hard Turn Against Science: Climate change? Unimportant. Affordable healthcare? Unnecessary. Anything that requires regulation or government intervention will be discarded.
What Comes Next?
If Trump’s presidency was a chaotic assault on norms, a future where Vance takes the reins would be something much darker—calculated, strategic, and relentless.
This is a generation of leaders who don’t just flirt with authoritarianism; they actively desire it.
For those who thought the worst was behind us, think again.
The old conservative establishment may have been corrupt and shortsighted, but the next generation is playing the long game.
And unless the public wakes up, the America of tomorrow will be unrecognizable—ruled not by the people, but by a self-anointed class of radical reactionaries.
It is not just democracy that is at stake—it is the very idea of freedom itself.
Sincerely,
